A Blast from the Past

It’s amazing the things that are coming back. Maybe they were never really gone just quietly hidden from view. Yesterday I was walking through the produce section of the store and there they were – boxes of them – the hula-hoop. It stopped me in my tracks.

These were definitely the upscale version of the hula-hoop. They are now in neon colors and have some pretty wild patterns. They were also available in three different sizes. I thought they were “one size fits all”.

While I owned several of them while growing up, I was never very good at it. I knew kids that could roll those things around their waist for hours. My personal best was measured in minutes – six minutes to be exact.

I’m not sure why they were in the produce section. I am not sure if they will catch on again. Three young kids were playing with them by trying to get them to roll down the aisle. Yeah, I’ll admit it, I seriously thought about giving them a hula hoop lesson right there in the store.

But, it got me to thinking. If the hula-hoop is coming back what about other things like bell-bottom pants and avocado green appliances?

You never know.

Bell bottoms have been back for a while, only they call them "flares" now. As for the avocado appliances, I'm afraid I'm stuck with just such a stove in the house that I rent. So perhaps I'll be in style again soon? Somehow, I doubt it. *G*

I'm hoping for the return of the mid 60's mini-skirt. Ralph, I'm glad to see you're alive and kickin.

During a recent trip to the mall I found leg warmers for sale in a very trendy store. My friend and I died laughing. We got a few glares from the sales people, but we couldn't help it because leg warmers are just strange!

I would imagine the hula hoops are back in because obesity is so prevelant now. What better way to tone down some waist lines, eh? Ya, I was going to say Ralph, bell bottoms are very in right now, and my youngest loves wearing her leg warmers over high heels, though she doesn't wear them anywhere but home. Ditto on the alive and kicking part.

Aravis is right. My kids corrected me last yr or so to say "flairs." As for hula hoops, I used to love those. They've been in our area for over 10 yrs but used to be harder to find. My kids love them.
Avocado green appliances: ewwwwwwww lol

Hula Hoops have been back around here for a bit. Mini skirts, "flares", hip-hugger pants (now known as "low-rise" are all back at least for a bit. Avacado green appliances... I don't know. There are somethings that are definitely best forgotten!

I wasn't really good at Hula-Hooping, but I was a killer jacks player, four-square champ, and I won a trophy for hotsies jumproping. Oh, those were the days...back when I was a fat little girl with the nickname Moose.
I enjoyed your blog!

I saw a girl in the mall just the other day wearing shorts, leg warmers and thongs - which are now called flip flops. I wondered where Cliff was so I ask him if there was still a shortage of mirrors.

See, that's something else and I wonder if it's a regional thing, but here "flip-flops" have always been "flip-flops." I have never heard them referred to as thongs until this blog entry. It made me giggle, actually. :0)

Stopped in to see if there were new headlines spun. Guess you're as busy as the rest of us!

Like Aravis, I also giggled, because we grew up calling them flip-flops. Some called then thongs, but as soon as those undies came out that are thongs, no one called the footwear thongs anymore! (Well maybe some teens to elicit a reaction ;)

I LOVE hula-hoops! I used to own a day-glo yellow one, but I think it died somewhere along the way. But what on earth, are bell-bottom pants? And did those used to come in "one size fits all" as well?
