Holiday Lights

I have never been a big fan of Christmas lights. However, I do understand why people put them up and on occasion even appreciate them.

But, what is up with Halloween lights? There are a whole lot of people in my neighborhood who are putting up Halloween lights and displays this year. The one above stands about seven feet tall, lights up, and greets me every night when I pull into the cul-de-sac.

For Halloween, I'm thinking of giving away BB guns and Wanted Posters offering a nice bounty on plastic pumpkins.

I have 2 neighbors that try to outdo each other with their Halloween decorations... they start putting them up the end of September. The thing is that we hardly have any kids coming by any more.

I just put a plastic ghost on the from door that I've had since "JPR" was 11 months old in 1976! And I do still give out candy... I buy less so I don't gain 10lbs each year!

Looks like his nose would make the perfect target! I don't do the Halloween stuff myself. We live in a small house and you have to have storage for all that "stuff."

(BTW, thanks for the bacon cheeseburger idea! Pup loved it!)

Ralph, I don't understand Halloween lights either unless it's being incorporated into a safety reason?

We keep decorations very simple. One year we had none as we often do and our then 4 yr old made skeletons to hang from the trees, etc. Should have marketed it! She's in honor art college now!

I love to dress up for Halloween. We're a theatrical family as you may have gleaned...well the 3 females... my husband lets us suggest and then he decides if it's comfortable enough (or not too outlandish) for him to wear. Poor guy is outnumbered. And yes, I confess to loving any holiday that involves chocolate!

Ralph, I made up a joke some time ago that I think you would appreciate. What word is Italian for a fridgid bag?

How can you not be a fan of Christmas lights?
I LOVE the holiday season and all the lights and decorations. Even the tackiest house looks good with Christmas lights.
Some people go nuts over Halloween. I'm not one that does that, but they are having fun. I usually decorate some for fall and we carve pumpkins and put candles in them. Of course, I join in on the candy eating too.

personally, i like the plastic skeletons that look like they're digging their way out of the lawn. and headstones. and scary music.

i bought a bag of sticky eyeballs at target. everyone at work thinks they're a hoot. one guy walks by my desk and can't take his eyes of my eyeballs (!) he paused and looked at me and said, "those are unnerving."

good stuff.

Halloween is tied with Christmas as my favorite holiday! I remember as a kid how I loved houses and yards that were all done up. One person turned their entire yard into a graveyard, with people in costumes and makeup coming out of coffins or dark corners, with ghosts and bats rigged up on wires to fly overhead. In the dark you couldn't see the wires. The man at the door was dressed as a mad scientist. You walked onto the porch and on a table to the right was a life-size dummy of Frankenstein. You had to reach into his stomach to get your candy. It was awesome! Halloween wasn't Halloween without a trip to that house. It's the sort of thing I would do, but I live on a dark and busy road. Trick-or-treaters don't walk along it; they stay in the village center. These days I'm feeling seriously Halloween-deprived! :0(

Ralph,
I am so with you on the Christmas light thing. I put up one strand around my picture window. I don't put out any other decorations other than Christmas cards, because I am gone most of the month of December. People think I'm Jewish.
There's a church in Tulsa that puts up two million Christmas lights (Rhema Christmas Light Tour) and has the nativity scene outlined in neon. I call it "Jesus goes to Vegas".
