Friends

If you take Highway 17 from Villa Grove to Salida, you will pass the Colorado Sand Dunes. You’ll also see two things you might find strange for Colorado. One is an Alligator Farm. Colorado and alligators just don’t seem to go together.

The other is a UFO observation tower. For whatever reason the San Luis Valley has more unexplained UFO sighting than anywhere else in the state.

Private individuals built this observation tower but it is open to the public. They even have a website. On a recent road trip, I stop to see it.

While I didn’t see any UFO’s I did meet some unique individuals. They weren’t very talkative. However, they did tell me about the time the made the front page of the National Enquirer for their visit with President Clinton.

I would like to know about the second picture. It is at the UFO observatory.
What are you sitting on?
What are you holding (besides the cutout figure)?
What is it's function of the thing you are sitting on, it doesn't look like just any old bench?
..

I think the ufo tower is just a front. The sticker on the window just above your left shoulder would maybe indicate an even crazier bunch of people....bird hunters. I'll bet someone would have a problem if they said they were building a tower to shoot birds.

Cliff - it was the hairline that gave it away, right?
Jim - it's at the tower. The tower in in the background of the first picture. I was setting on a wire bench it is pretty uncomfortable and in my hand is my camera bag.
Aravis - some people think they are everywhere.
Dan - You have good eyes. I had to really zoom in on the picture to read the sticker. You're right it's a duck unlimited donor sticker. There is a lot of hunting in the valley but the closest water to the tower is about twenty miles.

Oh Ralph, you are hugging your cute little purple alein buddy! Good thing you didn't get "beamed up!"

I thought it was a one-eyed one-horned flying purple people eater. But that one's got two eyes. Ralph, I think you and I would travel well together. "Next exit. Souvenirs. Cool. Let's stop."

And having been on a road trip with you, I can now imagine how you came to discover this place. You were driving along, the passengers happy and quiet in their seats, when all of the sudden you saw the sign, slammed on the brakes and threw the steering wheel hard to the right. . . :)

Am I right?

Well, either way it was a cool stop.

Just help me - if you are driving by it is worth the stop. If it's out of your way, don't make the effort.
Rachel - you bring up a good point. I am not sure what color they are.
Christa - yeah you're right what's your point? Okay, some of the best place (and some of the worse) are found that way.

Been to those dunes a number of times with the Scouts, and I've been up and down 17 to Salida the same number of times.

Someone once told me that that is the largest inland valley in North America.
